ADHD Shared Care GP in Belair, Blackwood and Surrounds

Collaborative Medication Management for Children & Adults

At Belair Family Health Centre, we offer structured ADHD shared care for patients who have received a formal diagnosis and treatment plan from a specialist psychiatrist or pediatrician. In South Australia, ADHD is primarily diagnosed and initiated by specialists; however, a collaborative “shared care” model allows your GP to take over ongoing monitoring and prescribing once your medication is stable.

We are a trusted clinic for ADHD shared care, serving Belair, Blackwood, and the surrounding Adelaide Hills.

Understanding ADHD Shared Care in South Australia

Shared care is a formal partnership where your GP assumes responsibility for your ongoing prescriptions and physical health monitoring. This model provides more accessible, local care and reduces the need for frequent, high-cost specialist visits.

Key components of our shared care service include:

  • Medication Management: Providing repeat prescriptions for Schedule 8 stimulants (such as methylphenidate or dexamfetamine) once a Section 18A Authority is granted by the Drugs of Dependence Unit (DDU).
  • Health Monitoring: Regular checks of blood pressure, heart rate, and growth (for children) to ensure medication remains safe and effective.
  • Holistic Support: Expert guidance on non-pharmacological strategies, including lifestyle, nutrition, and referrals to psychologists.

Specialized Care Pathways

For Children & Young People (Public & Private)
Dr. Jeremy Yang is a registered provider with the SA Health GP ADHD Shared Care Program.

  • Public Patients (CAMHS): For young people aged 16+ transitioning from public pediatric services, the program facilitates a “Transition Psychiatry” visit to approve GP prescribing for up to 5 years.
  • Private Patients: While the formal CAMHS program is currently for public patients, private patients can still access shared care through a direct agreement between their private specialist and Dr. Yang.
For Adults with ADHD

For adults stable on a long-term dose, Dr. Jeremy Yang provides ongoing prescribing support. This requires a formal handover from your psychiatrist, including a letter of support and clear dosing instructions.

The Assessment Process

While our GPs do not provide formal ADHD diagnostic assessments, we act as the essential first step in your journey:

  • Screening & Referral: We screen for co-occurring conditions (such as sleep disorders or anxiety) and provide the necessary referrals to specialist psychiatrists or pediatricians for formal diagnosis.
  • Continuity of Care: Once your specialist has stabilized your treatment, we coordinate the Section 18A application to move your care back to our local clinic.

Why Consistency Matters

Regular GP follow-ups ensure that your management strategy evolves with your life stage. This is particularly critical during the transition from school to further study or work, ensuring your support network remains intact.
