POTS & Dysautonomia GP in Belair, Blackwood, and Surrounds

Informed, Compassionate, and Evidence-Based Care for Autonomic Disorders

At Belair Family Health Centre, we understand that Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and other forms of dysautonomia are complex, multi-system conditions requiring specialized attention. We recognize the frustration many patients face; research shows that women wait an average of 7.0 years for a POTS diagnosis compared to 3.8 years for men. Our clinic is dedicated to closing this gap by providing a “POTS-aware” medical home.

We are proud to be a recognized resource for the POTS community in Belair, Blackwood, and the surrounding Adelaide Hills.

A POTS-Aware Clinical Team

Our clinical leads in dysautonomia care are Dr. Jeremy Yang and Practice Nurse Sheree. Both are members of the Australian POTS Foundation, ensuring our practice remains at the forefront of evolving clinical guidelines and patient support strategies.

We also recognize the significant overlap between Long COVID (PASC) and autonomic dysfunction, providing tailored support for post-viral syndromes.

Specialized Assessment & Diagnosis

Many patients experience symptoms like dizziness, palpitations, and “brain fog” for years without a clear answer. We provide structured diagnostic support to evaluate how your autonomic nervous system responds to postural changes.

The NASA Lean Test (Active Stand Test):

We conduct the in-clinic Active Stand Test, sometimes called the “NASA Lean Test.” This is a validated tool for checking POTS criteria:

  • The Criteria: A sustained heart rate increase of ≥30 bpm in adults (or ≥40 bpm in adolescents) within 10 minutes of standing, without a significant drop in blood pressure.
  • Safety & Accuracy: Our tests are performed under nursing supervision to monitor for symptoms like pre-syncope, nausea, and headache.
  • Comprehensive Screening: We rule out other causes such as dehydration, anemia, or thyroid disorders before confirming a dysautonomia diagnosis.

Ongoing Management Strategies

POTS management is not one-size-fits-all. We provide individualized management plans that focus on both non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions:

  • Lifestyle Foundations: Specialized guidance on fluid volume expansion, salt loading protocols, and medical-grade compression.
  • Activity & Rehabilitation: Advice on exercise physiology and “recumbent-to-upright” movement plans to manage exercise intolerance.
  • Medical Management: Careful prescribing and monitoring of medications aimed at reducing tachycardia and enhancing blood volume where appropriate.
  • Integrated Support: We coordinate with cardiologists and neurologists for complex cases while managing your day-to-day documentation for school, work, or NDIS support.

Why Specialized POTS Care Matters

Appropriate, informed management can significantly reduce the functional limitations caused by palpitations, fatigue, and fainting episodes. By addressing the root autonomic triggers, we help our patients regain independence in their daily lives.
