If you need to see a doctor or get tests regularly, you could end up with high medical costs. Medicare Safety Nets can help to lower your out of pocket costs for out of hospital services. Out of pocket expenses include all services to which a Medicare item number applies including GPs, non-GP specialists, allied health (as part of TCA referrals), xrays/radiology and pathology.

Medicare Safety Nets have thresholds. When you spend certain amounts in out of pocket costs in a calendar year 1 January to 31 December, you’ll reach the thresholds. Once you’ve reached the thresholds, you’ll start getting higher Medicare benefits (usually 100% of the schedule fee + 80% of the gap). This means you’ll get more money back for certain Medicare services. The threshold amounts are set each year from 1 January.

The Medicare Safety Net Threshold is dependent on your financial circumstances. In 2021, if you are a concession card holder or receive family tax benefit part A, the Medicare Safety Net will be activated once your family have spent $697.00 in out of pocket expenses. For all other people the Medicare Safety Net is activated once your family has spent $2184.30 in out of pocket expenses

If you’re enrolled in Medicare, you’re automatically eligible for Medicare Safety Nets. If you’re part of a family or couple you can combine your costs by registering as a family. Families have to register yearly.
